Honus Wagner T206 Fetches $1.35 Million
Mastro Auctions held its annual auction in conjunction with the National Sports Collectors Convention, and this year it included the “holy grail,” a T206 Sweet Corporal Honus Wagner graded Excellent - PSA 5 (MC). The card got 10 bids, with the winner grabbing it for a mere $1.35 million. This is roughly half of the record for this card, that being held for the auction of the infamous Gretzky Honus Wagner which is graded PSA 8. However, it’s far more than Mastro’s estimated value for the card - $500,000 to $750.000.
Among other high end items was a game-worn Lou Gehrig road jersey from 1938, his final season. This one could have been yours for a cool $200,000.
Wilt Chamberlains 1959-60 “The President’s Cup” MVP trophy from his rookie season in the NBA, a very museum-esque item, brought in $70,000.
Other items included a 1903 World Series program ($80,000), a Babe Ruth signed 1920 game-used bat ($100,000), a “Black Betsy” bat created for and possibly used by Joe Jackson ($21,000), and a Lou Gehrig single-signed ball graded PSA 6.5 ($37,000).
